George Gibson

George Gibson (?-1809) was from Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He might have been one of the two recruits that had apparently been with Lewis since leaving Pittsburgh. He enlisted at the Falls of the Ohio on October 19, 1803. He was a talented hunter, played the fiddle, and apparently knew some sign language that helped him communicate with American Indians the expedition encountered. He might have been one of those wounded by the Arikara Indians in the failed 1807 attempt to return home the Mandan chief Sheheke and his family. He married a Louisville girl and died while moving to St. Louis in January 1809.
