George Shannon
George Shannon (ca. 1785-1836) was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and moved as a child to Belleville, Ohio. He apparently was in school in Pittsburgh in the summer of 1803 and left his studies for the excitement of the expedition. He enlisted at the Falls of the Ohio on October 19, 1803. He was the youngest official member of the Corps and it is speculated (though not known) that he might have kept a journal. He lost a leg due to a wound received in the failed 1807 attempt to return the Mandan chief Sheheke and his family to their home. He attended Transylvania University in Lexington, assisted Nicholas Biddle with the official expedition history, and became a lawyer, legislator, and judge in Kentucky before moving to Missouri.
