John Colter

John Colter (ca. 1775-1813) was born in Augusta County, Virginia. His family settled in the Maysville, Kentucky, area about 1779. He enlisted in the Corps of Discovery on October 15, 1803, and was one of the expedition’s best hunters. He remained in the West, had many adventures, and became the “Father of the Mountain Man.” He is actually better known for his post expedition exploits than for being a member of the Corps of Discovery.
