York : Honors and recognitions

On January 17, 2001, President Clinton promoted York posthumously to the rank of honorary sergeant in the US Army.

On April 21, 2001, in Oklahoma City, York was inducted into the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum’s “Hall of Great Westerners.” This is a great honor for York, and recognizes his contribution to the history of the West. He joins Expedition veterans Meriwether Lewis, William Clark, and Sacagawea, who had been inducted into the Hall in previous years.

On October 14, 2003, a statue of York was dedicated on the Louisville Belvedere.  Read more about the statue.
